SEOUL, December 4 (AJP) - The main opposition Democratic Party (DP) on Wednesday called for President Yoon Suk Yeol's immediate resignation, denouncing his abrupt late-night declaration of martial law, which was lifted shortly after as the National Assembly voted to reject it.

In an emergency meeting at the National Assembly, the DP said it will soon begin impeachment proceedings if he refused to step down voluntarily.

"Yoon's declaration of martial law is unconstitutional and a clear violation of the Constitution," the DP said.

The party also accused him of undermining democratic principles, pointing out that he failed to meet the constitutional requirements for declaring martial law.

"This is a grave act of rebellion that leaves no choice but impeachment," the DP added.

The crisis erupted late Tuesday when Yoon, in a surprise televised address, accused opposition lawmakers of "paralyzing" the government through what he described as "anti-government" activities.

Citing the alleged threat to national stability by "pro-North Korean forces' anti-government activities" attempting to subvert the country, he declared an emergency martial law — a measure typically reserved for severe crises like war or insurrection.

The fallout from the overnight fiasco has further deepened the country's political conflicts, with the DP vowing to hold him accountable, raising questions about the embattled president's future.
