SEOUL, October 21 (AJP) - A special event commemorating the 68th anniversary of the Hungarian uprising was held in central Seoul last Friday.

Hosted by the Hungarian Embassy in Seoul, the event, also celebrating the 35th anniversary of its diplomatic relations with South Korea, gathered over 200 participants and guests including foreign dignitaries and business leaders.

Hungarian Ambassador to South Korea István Szerdahelyi stressed the significance of the Hungarian Revolution on Oct. 23, 1956, calling it "one of the most important days in Hungary's history," when the landlocked country in central Europe "stood against dictatorship, Soviet military occupation, and tyranny in the fight for freedom and sovereignty."

The envoy described the revolution as a historic milestone that brought unity, peace, and cooperation to Europe, pointing out that Hungary's independence came through immense sacrifices.

He also emphasized the growing relationship between Hungary and South Korea, particularly in the past five years. "The two countries share core values such as democracy and human rights, while enjoying deep, stable economic relations built on mutual trust," he said, stressing the need for continued collaboration to achieve shared goals for a sustainable future.

Ro Jae-hun, chairman of the Korea-Hungary Friendship Association, emphasized Hungary's close relationship with South Korea, including its participation in the Summer Olympics in Seoul in 1988, following the Soviet bloc boycott of the quadrennial event, and its support for South Korean port city Busan's bid for the World Expo in 2030.

"In the demise of the Cold War the two countries made a history together. The two countries played a role in reshaping the world order that brought freedom and prosperity," he said. "It is time to take the next step in many other areas."
