SEOUL, October 10 (AJP) - U.S. President Joe Biden reaffirmed his unwavering support for Israel during a 30-minute phone call with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu amid escalating tensions in Gaza and Lebanon. Vice President Kamala Harris, who is running in the upcoming U.S. presidential election, also joined the conversation.

The White House statement emphasized Biden's commitment to Israel's security and condemned Iran’s recent missile attacks on Israel, which occurred after the deaths of Hamas and Hezbollah leaders. While Biden expressed opposition to an Israeli strike on Iran's nuclear facilities and oil infrastructure, he acknowledged Israel's right to self-defense. He also raised concerns about the potential global economic impact of such strikes.

The conversation took place as Israel considers retaliating against Iran for the missile strikes on its military sites. The U.S. has warned Iran of "serious consequences" but has not supported direct military action.

The U.S. has continued to back Israel diplomatically and militarily since the start of the Gaza conflict, despite Washington urging caution about expanding the war. Biden endorsed Israel's operations in Lebanon, where more than 2,000 people have died, and over a million have been displaced.

Biden stressed the need for a diplomatic solution to the Lebanon crisis and expressed concern for civilians. He also urged Israel to minimize civilian casualties while defending itself from Hezbollah's attacks.

As the conflict expands, the U.S. has called on Israel to comply with international law and allow humanitarian aid into Gaza. Meanwhile, the Biden administration approved $14 billion in additional aid for Israel, supplementing the $3.8 billion in annual military assistance the U.S. provides.
