Xi outlined China's goals, sending a message to Trump and the next U.S. administration. In a statement released afterward, Xi emphasized that "a new Cold War should not be fought and cannot be won" and warned that efforts to contain China would be "unwise, unacceptable, and bound to fail."
Xi also said that maintaining a stable U.S.-China relationship is "critical to both parties and the world."
Biden, for his part, stressed the importance of ensuring that strategic competition between the two powers does not escalate into conflict. "Our two countries cannot let any of this competition veer into conflict. That is our responsibility, and over the last four years, I think we've shown it's possible to maintain this relationship," he said.
Both leaders noted progress on issues such as trade and Taiwan, though experts caution that tensions between the U.S. and China could increase under Trump's leadership. Trump's plans include raising tariffs on Chinese imports and appointing officials known for their hardline stance on China, which may worsen tensions.
