SEOUL, August 29 (AJP) - Seoul’s prominent media art festival, "Seoul Light DDP 2024 Autumn", kicked off on Thursday at Dongdaemun Design Plaza (DDP), a multi-cultural complex in central Seoul. This year's theme is "logging the future with light," illuminating moments that connect the past, present, and future.

Hosted by the Seoul Metropolitan Government and organized by the Seoul Design Foundation, the festival runs daily from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. until September 8. Visitors can experience large-scale media art displayed on the entire front facade of DDP.

This year’s event is particularly notable as it marks the 10th anniversary of DDP and the 50th anniversary of the passing of renowned Korean artist Kim Whanki, a key figure in 20th-century Korean art known for his abstract works incorporating traditional Korean elements.

The festival's highlight is a media art piece that reinterprets Kim Whanki’s work, using DDP's 222-meter-long exterior panels as a canvas. This installation features nine of Kim's iconic works, reflecting the themes of life, nature, art, and love. Media artist and Seoul National University professor Je BAAK and pop music producer Yun Sang produced and directed the accompanying music and video.

Following the tribute to Kim Whanki, a second artwork is presented by a media art label "VERSEDAY." It celebrates DDP’s 10-year journey as a Seoul landmark and envisions the future, showcasing DDP’s unique beauty through geometric patterns of dots, lines, and planes.

Visitors can access explanations of the artworks via an audio guide QR code available on-site. During the festival, various programs will also take place, including design exhibitions, art talks, and tours.

Last year, the DDP Design & Art event drew significant attention, attracting 1.36 million visitors, including those attending Seoul Light.

"This event offers visitors a unique media art experience and also highlights DDP's distinctiveness as it celebrates its 10th anniversary," said a DDP official.
