SEOUL, August 20 (AJU PRESS) - Korea is expected to come under the full influence of Typhoon Jongdari as it is moving towards the southern resort island of Jeju, bringing heavy rains, the Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) said Tuesday.

Formed southwest of Okinawa, Japan, this year's ninth typhoon is expected to pass through Jeju and reach Mokpo before dissipating in the southern coastal region on Wednesday, according to the KMA.

It will be the first typhoon to directly hit the Korean Peninsula this year.

Jongdari, named after the Korean word for skylark, is a small typhoon with the radius of maximum wind speeds of 240 km. But up to 100 mm of rain per hour are expected in southern parts until Wednesday, with strong winds blowing at a speed of up to 30 m/s.

But despite the typhoon, there will be no respite from this summer's prolonged heatwave due to the hot and humid air it carries, extending the record streak of tropical nights to 30 consecutive days as of Tuesday.

A tropical night is when the lowest temperature does not drop below 25 degrees Celsius after dark.
