SEOUL, August 2 (AJU PRESS) - Netflix's mega hit Korean series "Squid Game" will return with its second season later this year, the U.S. video-streaming site said Thursday.

The first episode of the second season is slated for airing on Dec. 26 over the Christmas weekend.

Netflix also announced plans to produce its third and final season slated for release sometime next year.

"Squid Game" is a dystopian thriller depicting desperate people who risk their lives in a series of games for high-stakes money.

The second season features returning cast members from the previous season including Lee Jung-jae, Lee Byung-hun, and Gong Yoo. The story follows the previous season's protagonist who returns to punish those organizing inhumane games.

The series' second season also includes new faces such as Yim Si-wan, Kang Ha-neul, and Park Gyu-young.

"I do have a lot on my shoulders, but I'll make sure it's worth the wait," said director Hwang Dong-hyk in an interview with Netflix last year.

Thanks to the explosive success of the series, which swept Netflix streaming charts around the globe shortly after its release in September 2021, Hwang and Lee won Emmy Awards the following year.
