Fencer Oh Sang-uk wins Korea's first gold at Paris Olympics

SEOUL, July 28 (AJU PRESS) - Fencer Oh Sang-uk clinched gold in the men's individual sabre, Korea's first gold medal at this year's Summer Olympics in Paris, France on Saturday.

Oh defeated Farès Ferjani of Tunisia in the final bout to become the first Korean man to win gold in the event.

With Saturday's victory, Oh became the first Korean fencer to achieve the feat of winning at four different major competitions -- the Olympics, the Asian Games, the World Championships and the Asian Championships.

Swimmer Kim Woo-min won bronze in the men's 400-meter freestyle on the same day, becoming the second Korean swimmer to reach an Olympic podium, after Park Tae-hwan who clinched two silver medals in the men's 200-m and 400-m freestyle events at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London.

Kim clocked in at 3:42.50 to finish third. Germany's Lukas Maertens won gold with a time of 3:41.78 after leading the entire race while Australia's Elijah Winnington secured silver with 3:42.21.

Earlier in the day, an unexpected medal came in the 10-meter air rifle mixed team event as Park Ha-jun and Keum Ji-hyeon teamed up to win silver, the first medal for the country at the Paris Olympics.

Korea wrapped up the first day of the quadrennial sporting event, with three medals - one gold, one silver and one bronze.
