Hwang will be feted with the Creator Tribute at the American film awards, which recognize "the iconic artists and creators who have enriched the landscape and pushed the boundaries of TV," with this year's ceremony scheduled to take place in New York on June 2.
Hwang, who took the world by storm with the dystopian thriller shortly after its 2021 release, had already won the gong for Best Long Form Breakthrough Series that year.
Released in September 2021, the first season of "Squid Game" broke multiple Netflix records as the most popular show of all time, accumulating 1.65 billion viewing hours in its first 28 days. The series also made history the following year as the first non-English drama to win six Emmy Awards.
The series' second season, released last December, maintained its popularity, with the third and final season set for release on June 27.
Along with Hwang, Amy Sherman-Palladino and Daniel Palladino, the couple behind the American period drama "The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel" and critically acclaimed ballet series "Étoile," will be the co-recipients of the award.
