Samsung Electronics leads hiring in Korea with 4,716 new jobs in 2024

SEOUL, February 05 (AJP) - Samsung Electronics remained as South Korea’s top employer in 2024, hiring 4,716 new workers despite ongoing challenges in its semiconductor business, according to data released on Wednesday by CEO Score.

The firm's national pension subscriber count rose to 125,593 employees as of the end of 2024, marking a 3.9 percent increase from 120,877 in 2023. Hyundai Motor followed as the second-largest employer, with 69,285 pension subscribers, while LG Electronics ranked third with 36,244.

Overall, the number of national pension subscribers among 468 of South Korea’s top 500 companies increased marginally, rising 0.3 percent to 1,594,119 in December 2024 from 1,588,817 a year earlier. The survey excluded 32 companies that underwent significant structural changes through mergers or divisions.

CJ Olive Young recorded the second-largest employment gain, adding 2,224 new pension subscribers, followed by Korea Railroad Corporation with 1,359. In contrast, LG Innotek saw the most significant decline, shedding 2,391 subscribers, while LG Display reduced its workforce by 2,346 through voluntary retirement programs.

By industry, the IT and electronics sector led employment with 332,570 pension subscribers, followed by the automotive and parts sector with 189,349, and the retail sector with 154,789.
