SEOUL, January 24 (AJP) - Vietnamese Ambassador to the Republic of Korea Vu Ho emphasized the importance of sustained dialogue and communication between Viet Nam and South Korea to further strengthen their relationship and adapt to the challenges of a rapidly changing global market.

In an exclusive interview with AJP on Wednesday, Vu underscored the significance of deepening bilateral cooperation to solidify the comprehensive strategic partnership forged in 2024.

Vu, who assumed his position as Vietnamese Ambassador to South Korea in early 2024, described South Korea as a "bustling country." Reflecting on the profound transformations both countries experienced over the past year, he noted that Viet Nam and South Korea are now "riding the same boat," sharing common goals of resilience and growth amidst global uncertainty.

Since the establishment of diplomatic ties in 1992, the relationship between Viet Nam and South Korea has steadily grown, culminating in the upgrade to a comprehensive strategic partnership (CSP) in 2024. Vu highlighted that this elevated partnership goes beyond rhetoric and must be reflected in actionable collaboration across trade, culture, and policy frameworks. "We must embrace transparent discussions to address challenges and seize opportunities together," he said.

The economic partnership between the two countries remains robust. As of the end of 2024, South Korea’s cumulative foreign direct investment (FDI) in Viet Nam stood at approximately $86 billion (123.5 trillion won). In 2024 alone, South Korea invested nearly $7.06 billion in Viet Nam, accounting for 18.5 percent of the total FDI, representing a 37.5 percent increase from the previous year. These figures firmly establish South Korea as one of the leading investors in Viet Nam.

In the interview, Vu stressed the need for a more balanced approach to exchanges between the two nations, calling for systematic efforts to resolve barriers, particularly those related to visa policies and labor mobility. He pointed out that enhancing systems to facilitate smoother economic and human exchanges will be a critical step toward deepening ties.

"Comprehensive strategic partnership is not an empty phrase. It must be reflected in all aspects of our relationship," Vu said, adding that addressing visa challenges and ensuring the development of a skilled Vietnamese workforce in South Korea are vital for the mutual growth of both nations.

He also called for South Korea to embrace greater diversity, noting that "national homogeneity, while a unique trait, can hinder long-term progress. Greater openness and acceptance of diversity will be essential for global competitiveness."

Amid concerns about shifting global trade dynamics under the new United States administration, Vu advocated for enhanced dialogue with major partners, including the U.S. "National interests are always a priority for every country. The challenge is finding ways to harmonize benefits without clashes," he said, emphasizing the importance of negotiation and understanding differences in values between regions.

On economic opportunities, Vu highlighted the potential for South Korean businesses, particularly in the retail and service sectors, to expand in Viet Nam. He acknowledged the growing competition in the Vietnamese market but underscored South Korean companies' strengths in digital transformation as a competitive advantage.

Addressing recent reports about Viet Nam’s near-finalized deal to purchase South Korea's K-9 self-propelled howitzers, Vu stated, "This reflects Viet Nam’s readiness to collaborate with all nations in diverse fields. The modernization of our defense capabilities is a necessary step in adapting to global shifts and ensuring national security."

Looking ahead, Vu reiterated his commitment to fostering balanced and harmonious exchanges between Viet Nam and South Korea, urging both nations to prioritize open communication and mutual understanding to strengthen their partnership further.
