The advisory was issued by the Seoul Government Research Institute of Public Health and Environment as Seoul's average ultra-fine dust concentration or PM 2.5 density was 97 ㎍/㎥ as of noon and remained at very harmful levels throughout the day.
Such advisories are issued when the hourly average concentration of PM 2.5 exceeds 75 ㎍/㎥ for more than two consecutive hours.
A spokesperson from the institute said, "Vulnerable people such as the elderly, children, and those with cardiovascular problems or respiratory diseases are advised to stay indoors. If it is unavoidable to be outdoors, wearing masks is highly recommended."
PM 2.5, which is about 1/30th the size of a human hair, passes through the filters of the human respiratory system, causing greater harm to the body than regular fine dust.
