The announcement was made after a meeting with the ruling People Power Party on Wednesday. PPP lawmaker Kim Sang-hoon said the extra public day off would help "boost domestic consumption and promote tourism."
He added that the week-long holiday will "also help ease traffic congestion" as many people visit their ancestral hometowns to spend the biggest holiday of the year with their families and relatives.
A final decision on the temporary holiday will soon be made with Cabinet approval.
The move came amid a need to stimulate consumption as the country ushered in the new year, in the wake of political turmoil caused by President Yoon Suk Yeol's botched martial law debacle last month, further compounded by a fatal plane crash on Dec. 29 that claimed 179 lives.
