SEOUL, January 7 (AJP) - The Oxford English Dictionary (OED) has added seven new Korean words and coinages to its latest edition, including dalgona, a traditional street snack made by melting sugar, as the country's rich cultural heritage is getting more recognized overseas.

Other words that made it onto the OED also include noraebang (karaoke), hyung (a boy or man's elder brother) maknae (the youngest member of a group), jjigae (stew), tteokbokki (finger-sized rice cakes simmered in a fiery-red spicy chili sauce), and pansori (traditional one-person narrative song).

Their additions came about three years after about 26 Korean words and anglicisms, such as hallyu (Korean Wave) and mukbang (a livestreamed video often featuring a glutton eating large amounts of food while engaging viewers) were added to the dictionary's update in September 2021.

First published in 1884, the OED now comprises more than 500,000 words and phrases, regularly updated to capture the evolving nature of the English language. The dictionary's examples include sentences from novels, academic papers, news articles, and social media posts where the word is actually used.

The OED defines dalgona, being picked up internationally through Netflix's megahit South Korean series "Squid Game," as "a Korean confection made by adding baking soda to melted sugar, typically sold by street vendors in the form of a flat disc with a simple shape."

The dictionary also defines maknae as "the youngest member of a K-pop group," with an explanation that it was derived from referring to "the youngest person in a family or group."

Meanwhile, the second season of "Squid Game" did not win any gongs at this year's Golden Globe awards, which wrapped up last Sunday, although it was nominated even ahead of its release late last month.

Director Hwang Dong-hyuk remained reserved saying, "I don't have high hopes for Season 2 winning [at the Golden Globes], but perhaps for the upcoming Season 3."

"Squid Game" is a dystopian thriller depicting desperate people who risk their lives in a series of games for high-stakes money.
