Construction contracts surge on semiconductor facility projects

SEOUL, December 30 (AJP) - South Korea's construction contract value jumped 18 percent year-on-year to 53.7 trillion won ($41.3 billion) in the third quarter, driven largely by major semiconductor facility projects, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport reported Monday.

Civil engineering contracts soared 56.2 percent to 18.2 trillion won, while building construction increased 4.9 percent to 35.5 trillion won. Private sector contracts rose 21.1 percent to 41.7 trillion won, outpacing public sector growth of 8.7% to 12 trillion won.

The top 50 construction companies secured contracts worth 26.5 trillion won, showing a 45.3 percent increase from the previous year, while companies ranked 51-100 saw a 14.5 percent rise to 2.3 trillion won.

Regional data showed non-metropolitan areas recorded a 30.2 percent increase to 27.7 trillion won, while the Seoul metropolitan region saw a more modest 7.3 percent rise to 26 trillion won.
