SEOUL, December 30 (AJP) - Investigators are seeking an arrest warrant for President Yoon Suk Yeol over his aborted martial law debacle earlier this month, as he continues to refuse to appear for questioning.

The Corruption Investigation Office for High-ranking Officials (CIO), an independent agency established to root out corruption in the government, said on Monday that it had filed a request for an arrest warrant the previous day for Yoon on charges of insurrection and abuse of power.

This is the first time in the country's history that an arrest warrant has been sought for a sitting president. An arrest warrant is often requested if a suspect repeatedly fails to attend questioning without proper reasons.

Yoon has been holed up at his official residence in Hanam-dong, refusing to respond to the CIO's summons three times so far.

Yoon's legal representatives said later in the day Yoon will soon explain his stance and provide a document regarding the arrest warrant.

Yoon has argued that the CIO lacks jurisdiction over the charges against him and does not have the authority to investigate him, which, he claims, made him unable to respond to the summons.
