SEOUL, December 16 (AJP) -- Two Army commanders were arrested Monday for their alleged roles in implementing martial law, which triggered the impeachment of President Yoon Suk Yeol last week.

A military court issued arrest warrants for Lt. Gen. Kwak Jong-keun, head of the Army Special Warfare Command, and Lt. Gen. Lee Jin-woo, head of the Capital Defense Command, citing concerns about flight risk and possible destruction of evidence.

The two commanders are accused of deploying troops to the National Assembly and the National Election Commission following Yoon's martial law declaration on Dec. 3. Both face charges of insurrection.

On Saturday, Lt. Gen. Yeo In-hyung, head of the Defense Counterintelligence Command, was arrested on similar charges.

President Yoon was impeached by the National Assembly on Saturday over the short-lived emergency decree.

The Defense Ministry said it has begun procedures to dismiss the three detained commanders.

Prosecutors have also requested an arrest warrant for Army Chief of Staff Gen. Park An-soo, who served as martial law commander during the crisis. A military court is set to hold a warrant hearing for Park on Tuesday morning.
