SEOUL, December 15 (AJP) - An opposition lawmaker has introduced a bill to suspend salary payments and restrict privileges for public officials, including the president, whose duties are halted following impeachment.
Rep. Park Yong-gap of the Democratic Party proposed amendments to the National Public Service Act and the Passport Act on Friday. The revisions would immediately suspend all salary payments to public officials once they are impeached by the National Assembly.
The bill also aims to bar impeached officials from accessing, reviewing, or acquiring state secrets or confidential information related to their duties.
Park criticized the current legal framework, highlighting the case of President Yoon Suk Yeol. Despite being impeached, Yoon continues to draw a monthly salary and retains access to sensitive state information.
“There is no provision to stop a president’s salary after an impeachment motion is passed,” Park said. “This allows Yoon to collect his pay and maintain access to national and work-related secrets even after being impeached.”
He added that providing Yoon with 21.24 million won (approximately $15,000) per month in salary, along with other benefits, is out of step with the sentiment of the people.
