SEOUL, December 14 (AJP) – Five top officials of South Korea's ruling People Power Party resigned Saturday, effectively dissolving the leadership under party chief Han Dong-hoon following President Yoon Suk Yeol's impeachment.

The conservative ruling party has been divided over its response to Yoon's failed martial law declaration last week and subsequent impeachment.

The mass resignation included Supreme Council members Kim Jae-won, Kim Min-jeon and In Yo-han, allies of President Yoon, along with Chang Dong-hyuk and Jin Jong-oh, who are considered close to party leader Han.

According to party rules, the leadership council automatically dissolves when four or more council members resign, triggering a transition to an emergency committee structure.

They resigned during a lawmakers’ meeting, where some participants reportedly demanded Han's resignation. Han had supported the impeachment vote, putting him at odds with many party members.

However, Han told reporters after the meeting that he would continue his duties as party leader, despite calls for his resignation.
