SEOUL, December 10 (AJP) - A Thai folk singer has died from blood infection and brain edema after receiving neck massage therapy at a spa in Thailand's northeastern Udon Thani province, local police said on Monday.
Chayada Prao Hom documented her deteriorating health on Facebook, describing how she visited the same massage parlor three times in October. After her first two sessions of neck-twisting massage, she experienced head pain and gradual paralysis. "I loved massage so much that I didn't suspect anything yet and thought it was simply the result of me getting another massage," she wrote, noting that her mother was a masseuse and she had studied Thai massage since childhood.
Dr. Thiravat Hemachudha, an adviser at Rangsit University's Oriental Medicine College, warned that aggressive neck twisting during stretching, exercise, or massage could damage carotid or vertebral arteries, risking paralysis.
"The risk increases depending on the force used when twisting, snapping, or rotating the head," he explained, adding that "repeated activities affect not only the nerves but also blood vessels in the neck."
