SEOUL, December 6 (AJP) - Lee Jae-myung, the leader of the main opposition Democratic Party (DP), accused President Yoon Suk Yeol of abusing his power for personal and political gains in a statement at the National Assembly in Seoul on Friday.
Lee denounced him, pointing out that the democratic values of the country face a "severe crisis" after Yoon's abrupt declaration of martial law, which ended in a chaotic overnight fiasco earlier this week. "What is shocking is that all of these began with Yoon," he added.
"The declaration of martial law on Tuesday is a coup to maintain or expand his presidential power," Lee said, calling it an "act of treason."
He also voiced his concerns about the possibility of another such attempt. "I'm worried that Yoon might resort to taking similar actions again soon," he said.
Meanwhile, the DP filed rebellion charges against Choo Kyung-ho, the floor leader of the ruling People Power Party (PPP), raising suspicions that he could be one of the "accomplices" in the martial law debacle.
This comes after DP spokesperson Cho Seung-rae argued earlier in the day, "Choo obstructed efforts to lift martial law on that fateful night by having PPP lawmakers stay away from a vote against it at the National Assembly."
He also alleged that Choo, along with Interior Minister Lee Sang-min and former Defense Minister Kim Yong-hyun, who reportedly proposed the botched plan and resigned from his post to take the fall, had plotted together.
