The South Korean military has detected North Korean soldiers dismantling part of power lines near the now-shuttered industrial complex since last weekend.
These lines, part of a network built by South Korea, were connected to transmission towers that supplied power to the complex.
The latest move is seen as part of North Korea's recent series of frenzies to eliminate symbols of joint cooperation between the two Koreas and dismantle facilities built during a thaw in inter-Korean relations.
These include the demolition of parts of inter-Korean roads along the border, such as the Gyeongui and Donghae lines last month, shortly after Pyongyang threatened to "completely separate" the territories of the South and North.
The complex, once a symbol of joint cooperation between the two Koreas, shut down operations in 2016 and has remained closed since June 2020, when North Korea blew up a liaison office there that had been refurbished by South Korea.
