The plans, released by the Communist Party of China Central Committee and the State Council on Monday, called for improvements in data collection, standards, and monitoring of food waste, according to the country's state-run Xinhua News Agency.
Food loss during production, storage, transport, and processing will be reduced to below international averages by 2027, the authority said. Food waste in restaurants, government offices, schools, and workplaces is also expected to decrease significantly.
The plans highlighted key goals, such as boosting public awareness of food conservation, reducing waste in catering and public institutions, and improving food waste monitoring.
With seven major initiatives, the plans will support the enforcement of China's food security and anti-food waste laws. Measures include encouraging smaller meal portions, providing rewards for eco-friendly behavior, and offering discounts for sustainable food choices.
Cultural changes, such as promoting simple and frugal weddings and funerals, are also part of the strategy to foster a food-saving mindset.
A 2024 report by the United Nations Environment Programme revealed that 1.05 billion tons of food waste were generated globally in 2022, with households responsible for 60 percent, the food service sector contributing 28 percent, and the retail industry accounting for 12 percent.
