SEOUL, November 19 (AJP) - India has surpassed China as the top source country for international students studying at U.S. universities.
According to a report published by the U.S. Department of State's Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs and the nonprofit Institute of International Education on Monday, the number of Indian students studying at U.S. universities during the 2023–2024 academic year increased by around 23 percent from the previous year to 331,602. This surpassed the number of Chinese students, which fell by about four percent to 277,398.
Indian students accounted for 29.4 percent of all international students in the U.S., while Chinese students made up 24.6 percent. Together, the two countries represented a majority of the international student population in the U.S.
In the 2022–2023 academic year, China ranked first with around 289,000 students, followed by India with around 268,000. However, this year, the rankings have reversed.
This marks the first time in 15 years, since the 2008–2009 academic year, that Indian students outnumbered Chinese students among international students in the U.S.
