SEOUL, November 8 (AJP) - Donald Trump’s return to the U.S. presidency comes at a turbulent time in the Middle East, where he has vowed to pursue peace.

Known for his strong support of Israel, Trump has also called for a swift end to the Gaza war, raising questions about how he will navigate the conflict given isolationist voices in his party and his own unpredictable approach.

If no cease-fire is reached before his inauguration, Trump will step into office as the Gaza war continues, and Israel presses its offensive against Hezbollah. Rising tensions between Israel and Iran, and with Iranian proxies in Iraq and Yemen, add to the instability, as do concerns over Iran's nuclear program.

Throughout his campaign, Trump emphasized peace, urging an end to hostilities. Israel’s current offensive in Gaza followed Hamas attacks on October 7, 2023, which caused severe casualties and humanitarian suffering.

Trump has supported Israel’s aim to “finish the job” against Hamas, though his specific strategy remains vague. His former alliance with Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu could also shape Trump’s approach, with both leaders seeking strengthened positions.

Supportive of Israel’s claims over Jerusalem and the Golan Heights, Trump has suggested ambitious development ideas for Gaza but has not yet proposed a clear postwar plan. With Israel and Hezbollah also in conflict, the Middle East’s trajectory under Trump’s second term remains uncertain as he weighs pro-Israel policies against his America First stance.
