SEOUL, October 22 (AJP) - The head of the UN agency for Palestinian refugees (Unrwa), Philippe Lazzarini, said on Monday that Israel is obstructing the delivery of vital humanitarian aid, including food and medicine, to northern Gaza.

Lazzarini said hospitals have been hit, resulting in power outages, and many injured people are not receiving medical care. He added that Unrwa shelters are severely overcrowded, with some people being forced to live in bathrooms. There are also reports of civilians being killed while attempting to flee.

Israel has intensified its military campaign in northern Gaza, focusing on Hamas militants believed to be regrouping there. However, local residents and medical workers say that hospitals and shelters are being surrounded by Israeli forces. Israel said it is helping with civilian evacuations and maintaining hospital operations while targeting what it describes as "terrorists and terrorist infrastructure."

Medical staff at the Indonesian Hospital reported Israeli forces stormed a school, detained men, and set the building on fire. Additionally, at least 10 people were reportedly killed by Israeli artillery in a Jabalia camp. With no independent media access in Gaza, these accounts rely on video footage and witness statements.

The Israeli military said it is investigating these claims.

Meanwhile, 41 aid trucks and six fuel tankers have entered northern Gaza, but a large amount of aid remains undistributed. UN agencies and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) described the situation as dire, with hospitals overwhelmed and essential supplies running out.

Israel's offensive is a response to the Hamas attack on Oct. 7, 2023, which killed around 1,200 people. According to Gaza's health ministry, more than 42,000 people have died so far.
