SEOUL, October 21 (AJP) - Support for Japan's opposition parties is rising ahead of the Oct. 27 general election, as the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) grapples with a recent funding scandal, a Kyodo News poll showed.

The survey revealed on Sunday that while 22.6 percent of respondents said that they plan to vote for the LDP in the proportional representation segment of the election, 14.1 percent supported the CDPJ, the gap narrowing to 8.5 percentage points.

In single-seat constituencies, opposition-affiliated candidates now lead with 33.2 percent support, surpassing the 24.6 percent for ruling party candidates.

Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba's cabinet approval rating is 41.4 percent, outpacing the 40.4 percent disapproval rate.

The poll, which surveyed about 1,260 respondents, found that nearly half of voters prefer an evenly split outcome between ruling and opposition parties in the upcoming election. CDPJ leader and former prime minister Yoshihiko Noda has seen his approval ratings improve as the election draws near.
