SEOUL, October 14 (AJP) – A 66-year-old Indian politician who had recently received a death threat was fatally shot by suspected gang members, according to news reports on Sunday.

Baba Siddique, a former lawmaker and minister from Maharashtra in western India, was shot multiple times outside his son's office in Mumbai around 9:30 p.m. on Saturday. He died at a hospital.

Local police arrested two suspects and are searching for a third believed to have been present during the attack.

The arrested suspects are reportedly members of a criminal organization led by Lawrence Bishnoi, who is currently serving jail terms for multiple murders and operating a crime syndicate.

A few weeks prior to the incident, Siddique had received a death threat.

Local media suggested he may have been the target of a contract killing linked to business rivals or a grudge over a slum redevelopment project in Mumbai.

Siddique had recently left the Indian National Congress to join the regional Nationalist Congress Party. He planned to run in Maharashtra's November elections.

He was also known for his connections in the Indian entertainment industry and frequently hosted lavish parties.
