SEOUL, October 14 (AJP) - A locomotive collided with the rear of a Cairo-bound passenger train in southern Egypt on Sunday, resulting in at least one death and several injuries, officials reported. This is the second train accident in Egypt within a month.
The collision occurred in Minya province, approximately 270 kilometers (168 miles) south of Cairo. Two carriages fell into a nearby waterway, and the railway authority has launched an investigation to determine the cause.
Footage aired by local media showed the carriages partially submerged. The Health Ministry reported that 21 people were taken to hospitals, with 19 later discharged after receiving treatment.
Train accidents are frequent in Egypt, where the aging railway system suffers from years of neglect and mismanagement. Just last month, a train collision in the Nile Delta killed at least three people.
The government has pledged to improve the rail network. In 2018, President Abdel Fattah el-Sissi estimated that around 250 billion Egyptian pounds ($8.13 billion) would be needed to overhaul the system and address its long-standing issues.
