SEOUL, October 8 (AJP) - The government has expressed concerns to China over its attempts to list traditional South Korean dishes as part of its own intangible cultural heritage. South Korean Ambassador to China Chung Jae-ho said he lodged an official complaint on Monday, as such attempts have sparked controversy here.

"We are closely monitoring the matter to address any historical distortions preemptively and take appropriate actions," Chung said. He added the embassy is also looking into textbooks and archives in major Chinese libraries and museums to check for any inaccuracies or distortions.

The controversy arose when it was belatedly revealed that China's northeastern province of Jilin added dolsot bibimbap or rice with assorted vegetables in a hot stone pot, along with other South Korean dishes, to its heritage list in 2021.

The province did not provide clear reasons or explanations for the inclusion of those dishes in its listing.

But this was not the first time China has made such a claim, as there have been several similar instances in the past.
