SEOUL, September 27 (AJP) - Western nations, including the U.S., U.K., EU, and Australia, have called for a temporary ceasefire in Lebanon amid rising tensions between Israel and Hezbollah. A coalition of 12 countries proposed a 21-day pause in fighting to allow for diplomatic efforts and to work toward a ceasefire in Gaza.

There is increasing concern that the escalating violence could lead to a broader conflict, with the Middle East on edge. In a joint statement released on Thursday, the coalition condemned the violence as "unbearable" and warned that it posed a significant risk of regional escalation. Both sides were urged to recognize that continuing the conflict would offer no benefits.

The declaration, signed at a UN General Assembly meeting in New York, was endorsed by the U.S., Australia, Canada, the European Union, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, the U.K., and Qatar.

U.S. President Joe Biden and French President Emmanuel Macron emphasized the need for a solution that ensures the safety and security of civilians, allowing them to return to their homes. They highlighted their collective efforts to push for a temporary ceasefire to give diplomacy a chance and prevent further escalation across borders.

In a brief media appearance, Biden expressed optimism about the ceasefire proposal, stating there was strong support for the initiative to halt missile strikes on both sides.
