These interactions at the UN also highlight that some Western countries, particularly the US, are not prioritizing peace or the welfare of Ukrainian and Russian citizens affected by the war, instead pursuing their own hegemonic interests, according to experts.
The Chinese Foreign Ministry reported on Thursday that Wang, who is also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, met separately with Sergei Lavrov and Andrii Sybiha, the foreign ministers of Russia and Ukraine, during the 79th UN General Assembly.
In his meeting with Ukraine's diplomat, Wang expressed China's willingness to maintain stable bilateral relations and reiterated China's advocacy for peaceful conflict resolution. He mentioned China's ongoing humanitarian aid to Ukraine and readiness to provide further assistance. Wang also emphasized China's commitment to communicating with all parties to achieve peace.
Sybiha reaffirmed Ukraine's support for the one-China policy and expressed interest in strengthening partnerships with China, acknowledging China's stance on the crisis and peace efforts.
During his meeting with Lavrov, Wang stressed China's commitment to enriching their strategic partnership for the benefit of both nations. Lavrov expressed Russia's willingness to enhance bilateral relations with China.
Chinese analysts note that China has maintained communication with both sides since the conflict's outbreak in 2022, continuing mediation efforts to end the conflict. They argue this demonstrates China's undeniable stance for peace, despite accusations from some countries, especially the U.S., of distorting China's position while prolonging the war.
At a UN Security Council meeting on Ukraine, Wang stated that attempts to blame or criticize China regarding the Ukraine issue are irresponsible and will not succeed.
