SEOUL, September 25 (AJP) - Qatar has become the first Gulf country to join the U.S. visa waiver program, allowing its citizens to travel to the U.S. without a visa for up to 90 days. This announcement came from the U.S. State Department and the Department of Homeland Security, which stated that Qatari citizens could apply starting Dec. 1.

Qatar's inclusion in the program highlights its strengthening relationship with the U.S., especially in efforts like mediating a ceasefire in the Gaza conflict, which is nearing one year. The Biden administration praised Qatar as a key partner, citing the country's leadership on human rights in Afghanistan, aid to Sudan, and its strong defense ties with the U.S.

Qatar is the 42nd country to join the visa waiver program, which is rarely expanded. Croatia joined in 2021, and Israel was added last year. To be included, countries must meet strict standards for law enforcement and border management. The program also requires reciprocity, meaning U.S. citizens must receive similar visa-free privileges in the participating country.

While U.S. citizens already had visa-free access to Qatar, they can now stay for up to 90 days, up from the previous 30-day limit.
