SEOUL, September 23 (AJP) - Battery maker SK On will begin manufacturing electric vehicle (EV) batteries for Korea’s largest automaker Hyundai Motor at its U.S. plant next month, industry sources said on Sunday.
SK Battery America (SKBA), the U.S. subsidiary of SK On, plans to initiate production of EV batteries for Hyundai at its Georgia facility in October. The company has been modifying production lines previously dedicated to U.S.-headquartered Ford Motor to accommodate Hyundai’s requirements.
The shift in production lines at the SKBA plant comes as U.S. production has become increasingly important for automakers due to subsidy considerations under the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA), and orders from Ford reduced.
During a second-quarter conference call, SK On disclosed that partial line conversion was underway at the SKBA plant, citing the increasing importance of U.S. production for original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) due to subsidy scales and other factors.
Hyundai Motor Group is set to operate its expansive EV manufacturing facility, dubbed “Hyundai Motor Group Metaplant America," also located in Georgia.
