SEOUL, September 20 (AJP) -China successfully launched two additional satellites for its BeiDou-3 Navigation Satellite System (BDS-3) on Thursday from the Xichang Satellite Launch Center in Sichuan Province. These satellites, numbered 59 and 60 in the BeiDou constellation, were deployed at 9:14 a.m. Beijing time using a Long March-3B rocket equipped with a Yuanzheng-1 upper stage.

These medium Earth orbit (MEO) satellites represent the second group launched since BDS-3 began offering global navigation services. Once in orbit and tested, they will integrate with the existing BDS network. The new satellites boast improved atomic clocks and advanced inter-satellite communication capabilities compared to their predecessors.

The China Satellite Navigation Office states that these enhancements will boost the BDS-3 system's reliability and improve its positioning, navigation, timing, and global messaging services. Additionally, the satellites will serve as testbeds for technologies intended for future BDS generations.

Looking ahead, China plans to accelerate the development of its next-generation BDS while also exploring satellite-independent positioning, navigation, and timing methods.

The Innovation Academy for Microsatellites (Chinese Academy of Sciences) developed the satellites, while the China Academy of Launch Vehicle Technology (China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation) provided the launch vehicle. This mission marked the 535th flight for the Long March rocket family.
