SEOUL, September 13 (AJP) - World Health Organization (WHO) Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus announced on Wednesday that 97 critically ill and injured individuals from Gaza were airlifted to Abu Dhabi, UAE, for urgent medical treatment. This large-scale evacuation, the biggest since October 2023, was conducted amidst heavy Israeli attacks.

In a statement, Tedros explained that WHO, in collaboration with the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs, successfully evacuated the patients along with 155 companions. They were transported via Kerem Shalom to Ramon Airport in Israel before flying to Abu Dhabi for specialized care.

The patients included 45 children and 52 adults with various medical conditions, including cancer, cardiovascular diseases, congenital disorders, and trauma-related injuries. Despite significant security and logistical challenges, WHO and its partners managed to facilitate the transfer by setting up a receiving facility at the European Gaza Hospital.

Tedros highlighted a special mission to transport additional patients from Gaza City to the hospital just before the evacuation. Fuel was also delivered for ongoing polio vaccinations.

Expressing gratitude to the UAE, he emphasized the need for more evacuation corridors and called for a ceasefire, noting that it would be the best solution for patient care.
