SEOUL, Sept. 6 (AJP) - Singapore and India have agreed to upgrade their diplomatic relations to a comprehensive strategic partnership, with a focus on strengthening cooperation in the semiconductor industry. The decision was announced during Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's two-day visit to Singapore, where he met with Prime Minister Lawrence Wong and other top officials.

The enhanced partnership, which Singapore currently only shares with Australia, aims to set a "forward-looking agenda" for bilateral relations. Both nations emphasized the importance of maintaining peace, security, and freedom of navigation in the South China Sea, urging peaceful resolution of disputes in accordance with international law.

A key aspect of the upgraded ties is the commitment to collaborate on digital technologies, including semiconductors, 5G, artificial intelligence, and cybersecurity. The two countries signed an agreement to foster talent in semiconductor design and manufacturing, while promoting Singaporean technology investments in India.

Singapore, home to global semiconductor companies like NXP and Micron, is recognized as a powerhouse in Southeast Asia's chip industry. This partnership aligns with Modi's government's efforts to attract foreign investment and grow India's domestic semiconductor sector, leveraging Singapore's established ecosystem and expertise.
