In Antipolo, east of Manila, a landslide claimed the lives of two teenage brothers and a pregnant woman in her 20s. Three others, including a 4-year-old child, drowned in floods in the same area, with one person still missing. Cebu experienced a landslide that buried two individuals and injured ten others, while in Naga, a man died from electrocution while inspecting his flooded shop, and an eight-month-old girl drowned.
The government has suspended classes in affected areas and halted public agency operations. Numerous domestic flights have been canceled, and ferry services in eastern and central regions have been suspended, stranding over 2,200 passengers.
The Philippine Meteorological Agency reported wind gusts up to 90 kilometers per hour due to Yagi and forecasted that the typhoon could intensify to the highest category by Sep. 8 to 9. The country faces an average of 20 typhoons annually, with recent disasters including Typhoon Goni in July 2023, which killed over 30 people, and the devastating Typhoon Haiyan in November 2013, which resulted in 7,300 deaths or disappearances.
