SEOUL, September 02 (AJP) - Myanmar's ethnic armed groups, particularly the Ta'ang National Liberation Army (TNLA), are under increasing pressure to halt their military activities near the Chinese border. The rebel groups have been waging a successful offensive against Myanmar's military junta in Shan State since late October last year, capturing key border trade points and military bases.

The joint operation, conducted by the TNLA, Myanmar National Democratic Alliance Army (MNDAA), and Arakan Army (AA), has made significant gains, including the capture of the central city of Lashio and the military's northeast command headquarters. These advances have raised concerns about stability in the border region.

Despite a temporary ceasefire brokered by China in January, fighting resumed in June. The continued conflict has prompted warnings from Chinese authorities, who have threatened "punitive measures" if the rebels don't cease their operations that could affect border stability and Chinese citizens' safety.

The TNLA has acknowledged the pressure and is currently discussing how to respond to the ceasefire demands. Meanwhile, Myanmar's military government, which came to power in a 2021 coup, faces increasing challenges as it struggles to maintain control in the face of widespread armed resistance and international isolation.
