According to the ministry, the cumulative number of users has reached to 2.15 million in about four months since the transit pass was first launched in May, as part of the government's scheme to encourage public transportation and address climate change.
The pass is valid for buses, subways, and trains in about 189 districts and cities nationwide.
Its biggest draw is that passengers who use it at least 15 times a month are entitled to a refund of about 20 percent of their transportation expenses the following month. The refund rate increases to 30 percent for young people and 53 percent for low-income individuals.
The average monthly transportation expenditure was 56,005 Korean won (US$42.19), with an average refund amount of 15,060 won ($11.34) over the period.
Thanks to these benefits, the number of users has been increasing by 50,000 each week. If this trend continues, it is expected to surpass 3 million users by the end of this year.
"We will continue to expand its availability to more areas and regions to enhance convenience for commuters," a ministry official said.
