The Constitutional Democratic Party of Japan (CDPJ), the country's main opposition force, signed a memorandum of understanding with the Chinese Communist Party to strengthen cooperation and communication. The Japanese delegation, led by CDPJ Secretary General Katsuya Okada, met with senior Chinese officials during their four-day visit to Beijing.
During the meetings, the Japanese lawmakers raised concerns about China's detention of Japanese nationals over espionage allegations and urged for increased transparency in judicial proceedings. They also requested the resumption of China's pre-COVID practice of visa exemptions for short-term Japanese visitors, citing demand from business circles.
The CDPJ delegation held talks with key figures from the Chinese Communist Party, including the heads of the International Department and the United Front Work Department. Discussions focused on the recent decline in lawmaker exchanges between the two countries and explored ways to promote more interaction, particularly among younger party members.
