SEOUL, August 28 (AJP) - Indian police used tear gas and water cannons to disperse protesters demonstrating against the rape and murder of a female doctor, AFP reported.

In Kolkata, the capital of West Bengal, thousands of protesters, primarily university students, marched towards the state government offices, demanding the resignation of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. They accused her of mishandling the case.

The police attempted to suppress the protest using tear gas, water cannons, and batons, while some protesters responded by throwing stones.

A senior police official told AFP that at least 100 protesters "have been arrested on the charge of creating violence."

The protests were triggered by the rape and murder of a 31-year-old female resident doctor at a public hospital in Kolkata on August 9. She was sexually assaulted and then murdered at the national hospital after entering a seminar room to rest following dinner. The suspect has been identified as a volunteer who was taking care of patients at the hospital.

In response to the incident, doctors across India went on a 24-hour strike, and some are still refusing to treat non-emergency patients.
