SEOUL, August 23 (AJU PRESS) - Thailand has become the first Asian country to confirm a case of the new mpox virus strain, clade Ib, according to The Bankok Post. The patient, a 66-year-old European male who arrived in Bangkok from Africa, tested positive last week.

The Department of Disease Control (DDC) has identified 43 close contacts of the patient, who are now under 21-day surveillance. Thai health authorities are intensifying screening measures at all international entry points, particularly for travelers from 42 countries with mpox outbreaks.

This new strain, which has caused over 500 deaths in the Democratic Republic of Congo, is reported to spread through various forms of close physical contact, unlike the 2022 outbreak that primarily affected men who have sex with men.

Thailand's Public Health Ministry stated, "Travellers from 42 countries with mpox outbreaks will have to register themselves on the health ministry's online application before leaving for Thailand and undergo health screening upon arrival according to global protocols."

The country, which has reported about 800 cases of the clade II variant since 2022, is preparing a 60-room quarantine facility in case of a widespread outbreak. This development comes as Thailand enters its peak tourist season, with the tourism industry contributing significantly to the nation's economy.

As Asian countries heighten their vigilance, Thailand's swift response highlights the growing concern over the spread of this new mpox variant in the region.
