The Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) said on Monday that the U.S. State Department has approved the sale of up to three dozen AH-64E Apache attack helicopters and other weapons to Korea.
The procurement, estimated to cost approximately $3.5 billion (4.7 trillion Korean won), is being made under the Foreign Military Sales (FMS) program, which is part of the U.S. strategy to supply weapons to foreign governments and requires congressional endorsement.
The twin-turboshaft attack helicopter by Boeing, known for its all-weather, day-and-night operational capabilities, is among the most effective in the world.
With the deal, Korea, which has been operating 36 Apaches since early 2017, is expected to significantly enhance its current aviation fleet.
The DSCA said, "The proposed sale will improve Korea's military capability to meet current and future threats by providing a credible force capable of deterring adversaries and participating in regional operations."
