In commemoration of the 79th anniversary of Liberation Day which falls on Thursday, the ministry held a ceremony to honor the sacrifices of those who fought for Korea's independence during Japanese rule (1910~1945).
Of the 27 descendants granted Korean nationality, 14 are from Russia, 11 from China, one each from Kazakhstan and Cuba. There have been about 1,392 such cases so far since 2004.
“We will make every effort to ensure that descendants of independence fighters and other activists receive proper treatment from the Korean government, including obtaining citizenship. We will also continue to search for more descendants of these activists,” said a ministry official.
