The incident occurred when the Los Angeles-bound freighter encountered hydraulic system complications shortly after takeoff. "The aircraft returned safely to Narita at 1:10 a.m. local time, with all seven crew members unharmed," a Japan Civil Aviation Bureau spokesperson said.
Upon touchdown, the officials discovered multiple ruptured tires and wheel damage on the aircraft. The affected runway remained closed for essential repairs and debris removal, with officials anticipating its reopening by mid-morning.
Despite the runway closure, airport representatives said that the impact on overall flight operations was limited. "Tires were changed and the operation of the runway is expected to resume at 8:30 am," the spokesperson added.
This event marks the second consecutive day of runway incidents at Narita, following Monday's temporary closure due to a Singapore Airlines passenger jet experiencing brake issues upon landing. The close succession of these occurrences has prompted calls for a review of the airport's emergency response protocols.
