SEOUL, August 08 (AJU PRESS) - Bang Soo-hyun, the gold medalist in women’s singles in badminton at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics and now a prominent TV commentator, has expressed disappointment in badminton star An Se-young's recent public criticism of the Badminton Korea Association.

In a radio interview, Wednesday, Bang said An’s decision to publicly air grievances about the association immediately after winning the gold medal at the Paris Olympics was “regrettable and disappointing.”

While acknowledging potential issues within the association, Bang emphasized the collaborative nature of badminton and the role the association played in An’s success. She suggested that An should have expressed gratitude for the support she received before addressing her concerns.

“As someone who has experienced the highs and lows of representing our country, I understand the challenges athletes face,” Bang said. “However, it’s essential to remember the support system that helped us reach the top.”

An, 22, has been vocal about her challenges training and competing under the association’s system. Her recent comments sparked a public debate about the state of badminton in South Korea.

“An is a product of the system,” Bang said. “It would have been more appropriate to express appreciation for the support she received and then address any issues privately.”
