SEOUL, August 8 (AJU PRESS) - Commuters can catch films during their subway ride, whether on their way to work or home, as Seoul Metro's annual film festival featuring shorts films returns late this month.

The Seoul Metro International Subway Film Festival (SMIFF), now in its 15th year, is set to begin its month-long run on Aug. 29. SMIFF offers about 50 short films, selected from 1,669 entries across around 59 countries. They are mostly micro-short films with a running time of about 210 seconds or shorter.

Subway riders can enjoy these films for free along major subway lines in the capital by scanning a QR code.

The festival has been held in collaboration with Subtravelling, a Spanish film festival with a similar concept, since 2016, with the films also being screened on major subway routes in Barcelona.

Both SMIFF and Subtravelling "are the only short film festivals in the world in which the metro and public transport are protagonists," according to the Spanish film festival's website. It states its aim "to help create a cosmopolitan cultural environment where anyone can enjoy films in places other than cinemas."

"Sharing the same vision from the beginning, the two festivals have forged a strong partnership," SMIFF organizers told Aju Press on Wednesday.

The festival runs until Sept. 27, with films available on Seoul Metro's website and on YouTube.
