SEOUL, August 6 (AJU PRESS) - G-Dragon of boy band Big Bang launched a foundation to combat drug abuse at an event in central Seoul on Monday. The launch fulfills his promise he made in December last year to establish such a foundation after being cleared of all charges related to alleged illegal drug use.

Due to his busy schedule preparing for his new album slated for release this fall, the flamboyant star was absent from the event but will serve as the honorary chairman of the JusPeace Foundation.

He explained what motivated him to create the foundation, "I believe that artists can influence a positive impact and help even more people, by engaging in social service or establishing a welfare foundation," he said in an earlier statement.

He also pledged one percent of his future proceeds from album sales will be donated to support music therapy for teenage drug addicts.

Korea, once known to be immune to drug use, is recently seeing a sharp increase in narcotics addiction. According to data from the Supreme Prosecutors' Office, the number of drug offenders surged to 20,000 for the first time last year.
