SEOUL, August 01 (AJU PRESS) - Korea has been suffering from sweltering heat and humidity for about a week with temperatures hovering above 35 degrees Celsius.

According to a forecast by the Korea Meteorological Administration on Thursday, sultry weather is expected to persist at least through the middle of this month, as the monsoon rains subsided last week, though there will be sporadic showers.

With heatwave advisories issued across the country, most parts of the country continue to suffer from tropical nights when the mercury refuses to drop below 25 degrees.

Seoul has experienced 11 consecutive days of tropical nights this summer since July 21 while Gangneung has had 13 days and Jeju 17 days.

According to the Ministry of the Interior and Safety, some 1,100 heat-related illnesses have been reported, including five deaths as of early this week. The ministry advised people to drink plenty of water while refraining from outdoor activities as much as possible to avoid heatstroke.
